Genetic Resources

Genetic variability is immensely valuable to chickpea breeders for its improvement. Owing to rapid agro-ecological changes taking place all over the world, many species, old and primitive cultivars, land race and their wild relatives endowed with superior gene complexes are being rapidly eroded. It is feared that many of these diverse form may become extinct in due course if corrective steps are not taken immediately.
With launch of All India Coordinated Pulse Improvement Project in 1966-67, several collection of land races, traditional varieties and primitive types were made. Several centres evaluate, maintain and conserve the germplasm holding. The objectives of Plant Genetic Resource handling system are two-fold viz. conservation management and utilization management. The conservation is done for posterity in order to save various genetic resources and diversities. The utilization management is effective in adoption of elite per se or unique germplasm accessions through their incorporation into various breeding programmes.

Germplasm 2009-10 :
Ten thousand eight hundred ninety four (10894) germplasm accessions were maintained at 13 centres. These accessions will be evaluated and rejuvenated in different years.
